As many new wardrobe changes as Logan goes through over the decades, Marvel's earliest Wolverine redesign will always be the best. Marvel’s most iconic heroes owe a huge portion of popularity to design details that separate them from other fictional characters. Spider-Man is instantly recognizable due to his mask's expressive eye lenses, regardless of his suit. Similarly, the Hulk escapes the mold of a generic monster thanks to his green skin; and Iron Man, who shares a very common archetype with dozens of high-tech armored sci-fi characters, stands out because of his faceplate and his red-and-gold palette. Wolverine is special among this exclusive collection of superheroes because he's unmistakable inside and outside his costume. Logan's wild hairstyle, mutton-chop beard, and short, hyper-muscular physique is an iconic design of its own, and it's instantly recognizable even if he swaps outfits. When he steps onto the battlefield in full Wolverine uniform, the exaggerated cowl flaps and distinctive tiger-stripe pattern belong exclusively to him. Very few characters in fiction possess two entirely distinct, flawless designs, and fewer constantly rotate between them without losing what makes them so popular. Marvel has attempted to update Wolverine's look dozens of times throughout the decades, including the time when he lost his adamantium claws and his nose as Feral Wolverine, and the time when Fox's X-Men movies dressed Hugh Jackman's Logan in all-black leather. Still, five decades after the character's creation, only one major redesign has become truly permanent. Giant-Size X-Men Cemented Wolverine's Yellow Suit As His Definitive Look Wolverine's Original Costume Might Not Have Stuck Around Without His 1975 Redesign When artist Gil Kane drew the cover for Giant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975, he misread John Romita Sr.’s original Wolverine design and accidentally extended the cowl's black ear-flaps. Interior artist Dave Cockrum immediately adopted the change and discarded the original The Incredible Hulk #180-181 design. Right from its first appearance, the new mask's bat-wing shape and white eyes ended up perfecting Wolverine's vibrant yellow-and-blue spandex costume and made it his definitive style, which replaced the ridiculous cat-man "whiskers" look for the next half century. Every new iteration of Wolverine's costume has adapted the Giant-Size X-Men mask ever since. In-universe, Logan's mask change also happened rather accidentally. Roy Thomas and Dave Wachter's X-Men Legends #2 revealed that, after a brutal conflict with the mutant Mesmero and the Living Diamond, Wolverine’s original costume was torn to shreds, forcing him to scramble for makeshift gear. Logan scavenged a replacement mask from a mind-controlled Beast, who had been hoarding novelty costumes. While born out of pure necessity, Logan continued to wear and refine this specific style. Throughout the years, Wolverine's newer costumes have only emphasized his second mask's size and coupled it with larger shoulder pads and bolder suit patterns. Wolverine's Second Look Is An Inevitability In Almost Every Timeline No Wolverine Story Is Complete Without His Iconic Redesign Wolverine’s yellow-and-blue costume is a certainty across almost every reality in the Marvel multiverse. In the original Ultimate Marvel Universe, Logan spent years clad in muted civilian-style black leather jackets and street clothes to match the early 2000s obsession with gritty realism. Eventually, Earth-1610's Wolverine started wearing a modernized yellow-and-black uniform to signal his true allegiance to the X-Men. Similarly, Hugh Jackman’s live-action portrayal started his journey wearing the X-Men's black leather suits, followed by a decade of flannel shirts, tank tops, and leather jackets. But even after Jackman's apparent Marvel retirement in Logan, his Wolverine inevitably returned with the first-ever yellow-and-blue movie costume in Deadpool & Wolverine. Marvel has introduced Logan's stealthy black gear, a variety of civilian clothes, and the similarly iconic tan-and-brown costume, and some of them have even become semi-permanent staples of his wardrobe, but the primary colors, large-flapped mask, and white eyes always reclaim their place as Wolverine's definitive look. According to Logan himself, the vibrant palette draws enemy focus away from the people around him and onto his indestructible body during battle. It might clash with his rugged personality, but Wolverine's Giant-Size X-Men redesign won't go away anytime soon. Which Wolverine look is your favorite?
