5 new movies to watch this week across Netflix, HBO Max, and more (September 7-13)

It's a new week, which means many of the major streaming services will be adding movies to their respective services. At HBO Max, one of the most divisive superhero movies in recent memory finally makes its streaming debut. Netflix has a pair of new releases: one comes from Tyler Perry, and the other is based on a beloved comedy series. Paramount+ welcomes one of the more innovative satirical movies of the last 10 years. Finally, our top-ranked selection of the week is an Oscar-winning fantasy comedy starring Emma Stone. 5 Supergirl The next chapter in the DC Universe The DC Universe had high hopes for Supergirl following the success of James Gunn's Superman. Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Superman's jaded cousin from Krypton who also has powers of super-strength, enhanced healing, and flying. After briefly showing up in Superman, Kara showcases her antihero qualities as the lead in Supergirl. While celebrating her 23rd birthday, Kara is approached by Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), a young girl who asks for Supergirl's help in avenging the death of her family by Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), the vicious leader of a bandit group. After discovering that Krem has something that can save Kara's dog, Krypto, Kara reluctantly agrees to bring Ruthye on her quest to find Krem. ​​​ Supergirl received mixed reviews earlier this summer before flopping at the box office. For fans of superhero movies, I think it's worth revisiting on HBO Max to see if the criticism was warranted. Supergirl streams on HBO Max on September 10. 4 Call My Agent! The Movie French comedy gets a feature-length adaptation As someone who loves movies and shows, I'm always fascinated by projects that satirize the business of Hollywood. The Studio is the best recent example of Hollywood satire, but 30 Rock, The Comeback, and The Player also fit the bill. Call My Agent! might be a French show, but its themes will relate to Americans who either work in the business or love laughing about it. After four seasons, Call My Agent! returns in a follow-up film, Call My Agent! The Movie. Former talent agent Andréa (Camille Cottin) is preparing to make her feature film directorial debut when her lead actor quits the production. Andréa recruits her former colleague Noémie (Laure Calamy) to save her movie, but as anyone who has watched a movie about making a movie knows, things tend to go wrong quickly and frequently. Call My Agent! The Movie streams on Netflix on September 10. Call My Agent! The Movie Release Date September 10, 2026 Runtime 117 minutes Director Émilie Noblet 3 Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Again? Tyler Perry's exploration of marriage returns for round three I'm a sucker for when a movie decides to set the story in Italy. What's a better setting than the beautiful scenery of an Italian village? In Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Again? the drama heads to Lake Como for a destination wedding. Written and directed by Tyler Perry, Why Did I Get Married Again? is the third movie in his Why Did I Get Married franchise and one of our top Netflix movies to watch in September. The friend group—including Terry (Perry) and Dianne (Sharon Leal), Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White), Sheila (Jill Scott) and Mike (Richard T. Jones)—travel to Europe to attend the wedding of Jasmine (Armani Greer), the daughter of Angela and Marcus, and Wesley (Everett Osborne), the son of Roselyn (Taraji P. Henson). Prepare for some hilarious shenanigans to ensue once this crew gets together. Why Did I Get Married Again? streams on Netflix on September 9. Why Did I Get Married Again? Release Date September 9, 2026 Runtime 109 minutes Director Tyler Perry 2 The Death of Stalin Satire at its finest Armando Iannucci has one of the highest hit rates when it comes to creating satires. Most American audiences know Iannucci as the creator of Veep, HBO's landmark comedy starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus about the fictional vice president of the United States. In 2017, Iannucci directed and co-wrote The Death of Stalin, a satirical look at the power struggle to find the Soviet Union's next leader after Joseph Stalin passed away in 1953. Some of the political figures trying to win the position are Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi) and Lavrenti Beria (Simon Russell Beale). A reminder: The Death of Stalin is based on real figures, but the story is fictional. That being said, you don't have to know anything about the Soviet Union to enjoy this hilarious takedown of politics and authoritarian regimes. Veep fans will not be disappointed. The Death of Stalin streams on Paramount+ on September 9. 1 Poor Things Beautiful and strange at the same time There are 15 actresses who have won at least two Academy Awards for Best Actress. Emma Stone joined that exclusive club after her win for Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos' fantasy comedy based on Alasdair Gray's novel of the same name. Poor Things is essentially a female-focused reimagining of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) finds the body of a deceased woman and replaces her brain with that of a baby. The new woman is named Bella Baxter (Stone), who acts like an infant despite being in a woman's body. As Bella's brain develops, she comes of age on a globe-trotting adventure that shapes her into a liberated woman. Stone's fearless performance was more than worthy of an Oscar win. At this rate, Stone is on the shortlist of the greatest actors of her generation, and I truly believe she can be the heir apparent to Meryl Streep. Poor Things is now streaming on Hulu.
