A couple of years ago, I heard people online saying that Perplexity AI would dethrone Google Search. That was enough inspiration for me to try the AI tool, and it worked for me instantly. While I saw its potential to beat Google Search, I never made a sweeping remark for or against Perplexity. That was primarily because I thought it was too early to predict the future of generative AI. Two years have passed since then, and I still believe that it's too early to predict who will win the AI race. However, I'm more certain about my future equation with Perplexity. After seeing its trajectory over the last couple of years, I no longer believe that it can replace Google Search. While I haven't given up on it completely, I recently started looking for alternatives. But this time around, I was keen on replacing it with something I could run locally. Fortunately, I found four local AI search tools that make abandoning Perplexity surprisingly easy. Vane is my favorite open source Perplexity alternative It runs entirely on my hardware I liked it when the team behind Perplexica officially renamed it to Vane. It gave the tool an identity instead of sounding like a Perplexity clone. I've been using it for months, and it has become my go-to research tool. After you set it up on your system, you can select three toggles, including Web, Academic, and Social. I graduated from college long ago, so I don't do academic research, but I keep Web and Social enabled all the time. The web search is enabled by default. It works well, but I also need to know what people think about specific technology on social media, and that's where the social toggle comes in. This runs on my hardware via Docker. I won't call the setup simple, but it isn't hard for anyone with prior self-hosting experience. Vane's GitHub page has the complete details of how to install it on your hardware using Docker. Before proceeding, install Ollama and a downloaded model like Gemma 4. SearXNG powers Vane's web search, but you don't need additional installations. SearXNG is bundled into the main Docker image that you installed. You don't need additional container configuration for the web search to work. SearXNG is an open source metasearch engine designed not to track your profile like conventional search engines, keeping your web searches more private. This is how I set mine up to make it private and work offline. Morphic works as a great Perplexity alternative, too It's a bit more complicated than setting up Vane Morphic is another open source alternative to Perplexity, and you can run it on their hosted cloud and on your hardware locally. However, I found the tool slightly more complicated to set up locally than Vane. The Morphic GitHub page has a handy guide on how to self-host it, but I encountered errors while setting it up. While it took longer than usual, I would still say it was worth it. Morphic works a lot like Vane as a Perplexity replacement. You can connect both cloud LLM providers and run local open source models offline via Ollama. While you can use commercial search API keys, you don't need one because SearXNG is included, like Vane. You don't need another set of steps to run it on your hardware. You can do most of the things Perplexity can do without paying anything. After you set it up, you can use it for real-time searches, drafting emails, uploading files to summarize texts, and more. Scira helps you find information on the internet and gives citations It also searches for songs, artists, and albums on Spotify Scira was previously known as MiniPerplx and currently has 11.8K stars on GitHub. It's free, open source, and can run locally on your hardware, like Vane and Morphic. Scira is the easiest to install among all the Perplexity alternatives I tried. What made me happier were its search modes: Scira has 17. It supports separate search modes for YouTube, Spotify, GitHub, Reddit, X, and more. Scira can decide which mode is right for you based on what you ask, but you can select one before typing your query. You can also upload a PDF and ask questions, paste a URL and extract content, and type what information you want Scira to find. However, this isn't SearXNG powering the web search. Instead, it depends on Exa AI for web search and content retrieval. Exa AI isn't open source, so from a privacy and transparency standpoint, SearXNG-powered web searches are better than what you get on Scira. Although I'm not into coding, you can run Scira locally to write and execute Python code. You can also use its Supermemory feature to save and search memories. Scira supports several LLM models, including Qwen, DeepSeek, Mistral, and more. Keeping the technical side aside, Scira has the most user-friendly interface among all the alternatives I tried. It can easily replace Perplexity. Verity also has tons of features to replace Perplexity It's open source and free The Verity GitHub page highlights multiple installation guides you can follow to start running Verity locally on your hardware. It supports CLI and WebUI, which means you can use it from both the Command Line Interface and your web browser. Like Vane and Morphic, you don't need paid APIs to set up Verity. It supports SearXNG-powered search, Ollama, llama.cpp, and all OpenAI-compatible LLM servers. In addition, Verity supports Docker. It's powered by Jan-nano 4B, which is designed and trained for deep research tasks, but you can configure any model you want. Since the setup is on your hardware, your searches stay private, which isn't the case with Perplexity. However, for this to work, you'll need to install SearXNG separately on your machine before cloning or downloading the repo from the GitHub page. If you are familiar with self-hosting using Docker, installing SearXNG should feel simple. I recommend it to anyone looking for an open source local alternative to Perplexity. These tools made abandoning Perplexity surprisingly easy None of these tools are new, but I was too lazy to go through another learning curve to try open source alternatives on my PC. This was back when I used Perplexity to search the web and didn't have many complaints about it. This was also when self-hosting felt like something too technical for me. Several years have passed since then, and I no longer speak as highly of Perplexity as I used to. On top of that, I learned to self-host. So, it was more fun setting them up on my PC. However, little did I know I would keep using them to this date and would consider them worthy replacements for Perplexity. While there are many alternatives, what makes these tools special is that I can run them locally and my web searches remain private, unlike with Perplexity. I have no plan to go back now.
