Among these mutants, there are several who have the power to alter reality and threaten the entire world, naturally drawing attention. However, there is one mutant that Professor Charles Xavier is particularly close to, and he once deemed him the most powerful mutant in existence. David Haller, better known as Legion, is Professor X’s son and one of the most powerful and unpredictable Omega-level mutants in all of Marvel. Xavier confirmed this claim three years ago in a journal entry that revealed much more than his assessment of Legion’s power, because this journal entry also revealed just how far ahead Xavier was willing to go in the face of his son’s immense power. Professor X Recognizes Legion as the Most Powerful Mutant In Legion of X #10, Charles Xavier’s private journal gives readers a glimpse into his mind regarding his son, David Haller. While his utmost dream and greatest ambition have always been to create a future in which mutantkind can coexist peacefully with humanity, his stance toward his son proves that he also understands the limits of that idealistic dream. In regard to his son, Xavier writes: “He is, by my estimation, the most powerful mutant alive. His skills multiply at a rate that dwarfs any individual’s ability to manage. This would be a troubling enough reality in an adult of sound mind, but – with his difficulties? His challenges, his lapses of equanimity and control? His passions? His ambitions? His grudges? Intolerable.” This both cements Legion’s status as a mutant of extraordinary and dangerous power as well as reinforcing the concern that he can’t be fully trusted with that power. The fact that this admission comes from Legion’s father also carries even more weight considering that Xavier has come across countless formidable mutants throughout his life. However, what stands out most from his assessment of Legion is what he says next. Rather than trusting that David will somehow find a way to manage his own abilities, Xavier comes up with the Daedalus Contingency. This is a psychic protocol that is designed to infiltrate his son’s mind to leave him in a near-catatonic state where they would be incapable of conscious aggression, effectively neutralizing any potential threat David could pose to Xavier, his school, fellow mutants, humanity, and especially the dream he spent years working tirelessly to achieve. Legion’s Power Has No Limits and His Control Is Far From Absolute While Xavier’s concerns and contingencies toward his son may seem extreme or harsh, they're not completely unjustifiable when looking at Legion’s powers and mental state. David has a severe dissociative identity disorder with over 200 different alters residing within his mind, and unlike most other mutants who specialize in a single ability, David has an overwhelming variety of powers, with each alter having a unique ability. Modern storylines push this further, suggesting he has over 1,000 distinct personalities in his head; many are born from the minds of real people who died near Legion, while others spontaneously appear in life-threatening situations. That said, no matter how these alters appear, they almost always come with a unique power set of their own, granting Legion reality manipulation, time travel, teleportation, telepathy, telekinesis, gravity manipulation, and the list goes on. Most notably, Legion is the one responsible for kicking off the Age of Apocalypse storyline after he travels to the past to kill Magneto, only to completely devastate the timeline. Devastating consequences like these are precisely what drove Xavier to take extreme measures and create the Daedalus Contingency in the first place, as Legion simply couldn’t be trusted to control his power. Given his history, his immense and seemingly unending power growth, and his instability, it’s not too far off to consider Legion one of the most powerful mutants in the Marvel universe. Xavier’s private journal entry and precautions in Legion of X prove that David Haller has so much destructive potential that he frightens his father and stands as a direct threat to the world.
