I love a good thriller, but finding one I haven’t already watched (or had the ending spoiled for me) is another matter. Netflix has plenty of thrillers to choose from, although it’s easy to keep coming across the same familiar titles when you’re deciding what to watch. Looking through the older releases can help. These three films I've picked cover everything from crime investigations to horror, and each is worth considering if you’re running out of things to add to your watchlist. Calibre It takes two to tango For a film that’s easy to miss on Netflix, Calibre had quite a promising start. It won Best British Feature Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2018, and it was writer-director Matt Palmer’s first feature. That’s a good reason to give this Scottish thriller a chance if you haven’t come across it before. The story follows childhood friends Vaughn and Marcus, who head to a remote village in the Scottish Highlands for a hunting trip. After a fatal accident, they decide to cover up what happened. But staying in the village means spending time with the locals, answering questions, and trying to behave normally while keeping a terrible secret under wraps. The setup is made so uncomfortable by how claustrophobic the entire place and scenario feel. Every decision has consequences, and admitting the truth becomes harder the longer they bury it. The friendship takes center stage here: the two men have to depend on each other, even as their choices make their situation worse. Calibre Release Date June 29, 2018 Cast Jack Lowden, Martin McCann, Tony Curran, Kate Bracken, Cal Macaninch, Ian Pirie, Cameron Jack, George Anton Runtime 101 Minutes Director Matt Palmer Writers Matt Palmer Main Genre Thriller Shimmer Lake A story is best told in reverse Shimmer Lake is one of the most unique finds on Netflix and a nice option when you want a thriller with a different tone. The film serves comedy with a dark sense of humor, even though its story involves a bank robbery and a messy investigation. Benjamin Walker plays a local sheriff searching for three robbery suspects, including his own brother. The unusual part is how the film tells the story: it moves backwards, taking you through the days leading up to the aftermath of the robbery. You get to see the consequences before finding out exactly how everyone got there, which is super fascinating. The play with the story structure kind of reminds me of another underrated Netflix title, Kaleidoscope. As Shimmer Lake goes back, you get more context for things you’ve already seen. The robbery itself is only part of the mystery; understanding what the people involved were trying to do is also something you need to pay attention to. shimmer lake Release Date June 9, 2017 Cast Benjamin Walker, Rainn Wilson, John Michael Higgins, Rob Corddry, Adam Pally, Ron Livingston, Wyatt Russell, Stephanie Sigman, Mark Rendall, Julie Khaner, Karl Campbell, Angela Vint, Jordan Duarte, Matthew Evans Landry, Adam Saunders, Neil Whitely, Isabel Dove, Danny Waugh, Pasqualina Cardu Runtime 83 minutes Director Oren Uziel Producers Adam Saunders The Perfection Why strive for anything less? If you know Allison Williams from Jordan Peele's Get Out, The Perfection is another of her horror roles worth looking up. With Logan Browning, the pair lead a film that gets stranger as it unravels. Keep the reading of its details to a minimum before watching this one, since revealing too much would take away a lot from its thrill. Williams plays Charlotte, a talented cellist who puts her career on hold to care for her mother. When she reconnects with her former music school, she meets Elizabeth, the new star pupil played by Browning. Their shared background brings them together, but their relationship soon takes a disturbing turn. The pressure of being an exceptional musician gives the film an uncomfortable starting point, particularly for Charlotte, who has returned to find someone else enjoying the success she once wanted. From there, the story takes some unpredictable turns. The Perfection is the movie to choose when you’re in the mood for a thriller that leans into horror.
