Rajkumar Hirani has addressed the much-awaited possibility of a sequel to his 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots. The filmmaker revealed that the story is still being developed and stressed that the project will only move forward if the script eventually feels right. In an interview with ANI, Hirani said that the story is currently being written and that he does not want to discuss the sequel until it reaches the right stage.“Kahani likhi jaa rahi hai (Story is being written), we are still writing. Once it reaches the right point, then we will talk about it. Abhi toh (Right now) we are still writing. Casting will be the same,” he said.Hirani also revealed that the idea for the potential sequel did not initially begin as a 3 Idiots follow-up. According to the 63-year-old filmmaker, he and his team were working on another story when they realised that the narrative could fit the lives of the characters from 3 Idiots. “Abhi jo likh raha hoon voh bhi nahi socha ki sequel ke hisaab se likh raha hoon. Hum koi aur kahani likh rahe the phir aisa laga ki jo likh di hai voh iss second part par fit ho jayegi.” (Even what I am writing now, I had not thought of it as a sequel. We were writing another story, and then it felt like the story we had written would fit into this second part.)He further clarified that the potential sequel would not simply revisit the three protagonists as students. Instead, the story would explore what happened in their lives two decades later. “It's not about the students; it's about 20 years later ab kya hota hai unki life main. (It’s not about the students; it’s about what happens in their lives 20 years later.)However, Hirani was quick to point out that the sequel is far from officially locked. He said the team is still working on the script and will only turn it into a film if they are convinced that the story works.Other than this, the Dunki director also looked back at his journey while directing Munna Bhai M.B.B.S and revealed that the Sanjay Dutt-starrer was never conceived as a sequel from the outset. Recalling the mindset at the time, he said sequels were not considered a safe bet because most earlier attempts had failed.“Munna Bhai ka bhi jab sequel banaya tha, voh koi intention nahi tha banaen ka. Agar aap uss waqt ko yaad kare toh uss time par belief was that sequels don’t work. Pehle jitne sequels bane the kabhi nahi chale,” (“When I made the sequel to Munna Bhai as well, there was no intention of making one initially. If you remember that time, the belief was that sequels don’t work. The sequels that had been made earlier had never worked), he said.Hirani explained that when people questioned him about making a sequel years after the original, his response was that audiences wouldn’t necessarily return simply because a film was being presented as a sequel. He shared that the idea for Lage Raho Munna Bhai emerged when he was working on another story and realised that the plot would fit the characters from Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.Meanwhile, 3 Idiots starred Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, R Madhavan, Kareena Kapoor and Boman Irani in key roles.- EndsPublished By: Prachi aryaPublished On: Sep 2, 2026 11:38 IST
