On last weekend's Disney+ movie recommendations, I talked about The Art of Racing in the Rain, Toy Story 4, and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. So, that is a drama, an animated adventure, and a fantasy epic, three different genres to give Disney+ subscribers something different with every pick. At the time of writing, only one of those movies is trending on the streaming service nationwide. That would be Toy Story 4, which currently stands as the 5th most-watched movie on Disney+ in the United States. For this weekend's Disney+ recommendations, I decided to go with something the streamer does better than most: franchises. Disney+'s movie library is well-known for the wide variety of beloved movie and TV show franchises it is a home to, including both animated and live-action hit universes. I say we make the most of those two mediums this weekend with timely releases. The three new Disney+ movie recommendations tap into different reasons why they are timely. One of those has just arrived on the streaming service after a successful theatrical run in 2026. The other comes shortly before the final episodes of one of its stars' ongoing hit series. The final entry connects to both a new video game and an upcoming movie. These are the Disney+ movie recommendations: 3 Toy Story 5 (2026) Starting us off is Toy Story 5, the only movie to connect with last weekend's list, as its immediate predecessor, Toy Story 4, was among the recommendations. This is yet another emotional ride with characters many Disney+ subscribers have been following since they were kids. Woody, Buzz, Jesse, and the whole gang are back for an adventure that will make fans laugh, cry, and cheer. This time around, the main threat the toys face is Lilypad, Bonnie's new tablet. The Toy Story franchise returns to offer commentary on connection and how kids no longer playing with toys to stay all day facing screens is not healthy. Toy Story 5 made a whopping $1.146 billion worldwide. After the animated hit arrived on Disney+ this Wednesday, September 23, it has instantly become Disney+'s most-watched movie in the United States. The film is perfect for the whole family. 2 Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) Moving from our animated portion to the live-action entries on the list is the perfect transition movie, Mufasa: The Lion King, aka the prequel/sequel to the live-action remake of The Lion King. Despite criticism over the need for remakes for Disney's animated classics, The Lion King proved itself a hit with viewers, holding a stellar 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $1.662 billion worldwide. Mufasa: The Lion King holds that same exact Rotten Tomatoes audience score, with a healthy $722.6 million. As its title suggests, Disney+ subscribers will be able to learn more about one of the franchise's most popular characters, Mufasa, who is voiced by none other than Aaron Pierre. Given how the actor is now the talk of the town as John Stewart in DC's Lanterns series on HBO, which only has two more episodes left to air, Mufasa comes as the perfect companion piece on another streamer. 1 Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) Finally, Deadpool & Wolverine is a great movie to end the weekend on Disney+ for multiple reasons. For one, it has started to trend again on the streaming service, with the R-rated movie now at 9th on Disney+ in the United States. Additionally, with the theatrical release of Avengers: Endgame Encore, rumors about Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine returning in December's Avengers: Doomsday have become timely yet again. Then, there is also the fact that Marvel's Wolverine, the new video game for the PS5 from Insomniac Games, was released on September 15. As the final weekend of September comes, the month is on a Wolverine high, and what better movie to complete that then Jackman's biggest to date. Disney+ subscribers will be well-served with the R-rated, action-packed, and hilarious ride to end the month.
