Sign in to your ScreenRant account Disney+ subscribers will find the most timely and engaging movies to watch on the streaming service this weekend in the form of a heartfelt drama and two films that come from massive franchises. On last weekend's Disney+ movie recommendations, I talked about the animated ParaNorman, Marvel Studios' Captain America: Civil War, and Sony's Spider-Man Universe's R-rated villain movie Kraven the Hunter. Right now, only one of those films is trending on Disney+ nationwide. That would be ParaNorman, which currently stands as the 8th most-watched movie on Disney+ in the United States. After no MCU movies found themselves on Disney+'s US chart for a time, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's Deadpool & Wolverine sits at 10th, though Captain America: Civil War is out. For this weekend's Disney+ movie recommendations, I decided to continue with two franchise entries and a standalone movie. Only there are no superhero films among this weekend's recommendations. The franchises in question come from the fantasy realm. One of them, which produced multiple stars, recently got a new chapter in a very different way among the best Disney+ TV shows. The other is one of the most beloved movie franchises of all time, and the inclusion of one of its films comes quite timely. Joining them is a drama starring an actor who has become known for his work in emotional TV shows, but who beautifully shows his skills as a movie's leading man here. Check out the best movies on Disney+ below: 3 The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019) Starting us off is The Art of Racing in the Rain, the only non-franchise movie on the list. Many will recognize its main star, Milo Ventimiglia, from hit TV shows like This Is Us, Gilmore Girls, Heroes, and more. Throughout his career, Ventimiglia has cemented himself as an actor whose performances are made to tug at viewers' heartstrings. The Art of Racing in the Rain follows Ventimiglia as Denny Swift, who dreams of racing in Formula One in the future. Told from the perspective of Kevin Costner's Enzo, a Golden Retriever, the movie follows the duo's life and their struggles, including the addition of Amanda Seyfried as Eve, Denny's romantic interest, and more. The emotional story earned a near-perfect 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. 2 Toy Story 4 (2019) Starting our franchise entries is the animated Toy Story 4. The film is a timely release for fans of the franchise that have not yet caught up. After all, after having been released in theaters on June 19, Toy Story 5 is coming to Disney+ on Wednesday, September 23. As such, Disney+ subscribers have one more weekend to be up-to-date with the franchise. Toy Story 4 tells a powerful story as Tom Hanks' Woody ponders what he really wants in life when faced with the opportunity of reigniting an old spark and veering towards a different path. That film's ending and storyline play an important role in this year's Toy Story 5, so you will not want to skip it. Toy Story 4 has a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. 1 Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) Finally, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, the first of the two fantasy movies based on the hit Rick Riordan series of novels, is another timely release and the second franchise entry in our Disney+ movie recommendations. Earlier this week, Entertainment Weekly shared new images from Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 3, which adapts The Titan’s Curse. While the two versions of the Percy Jackson franchise are not connected, those craving more can find so in the enjoyable, though inaccurate, adaptation of Riordan's first fantasy novel in the franchise. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief presents creative action sequences, charismatic characters and stars, such as Lerman's Percy Jackson and Alexandra Daddario's Annabeth Chase, and many memorable moments. As such, the fantasy epic is the perfect movie on Disney+ to finish our weekend list.
