Sign in to your ScreenRant account Disney+ subscribers will find a rom-com classic, a divisive live-action adaptation that is finding new life, and a sci-fi thriller from a talented group of stars and creatives on the streaming service this weekend. On last weekend's Disney+ movie recommendations, I explored the pros of films like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Out of those three exciting movies, The Nightmare Before Christmas is the only one to be trending on Disney+ as we head into another October weekend. At the time of writing, the animated holiday film ranks high as the 2nd most popular movie on Disney+ in the US. It is only beaten by a recent streaming release, and that movie is part of our new recommendations. Last weekend we had a horror-tinged fantasy movie, a superhero team-up from Marvel, and a sci-fi thriller from The Hunger Games franchise. I decided to go for a lighter overall tone this weekend. That said, there is an intense movie produced by Resident Evil's Zach Cregger, a sci-fi thriller with shocking twists, for those who want something with a bit more bite to it. As for the other two movies Disney+ subscribers should check out on the streaming service this weekend, both are trending right now in the US. One of them is a charming rom-com that just became timely for a rewatch after a reunion of sorts. The other is part of Disney's streak of live-action adaptations. These are the best movies to watch on Disney+ this weekend: 3 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) Starting our list is the rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You, which is climbing Disney+'s charts. At the time of writing, the 1999 classic stands as the 7th most-watched movie on Disney+ in the United States. The rom-com's resurgence connects to how most of the 10 Things I Hate About You reunited on the latest season of Dancing with the Stars for Dedication Night, where Julia Stiles performed in homage to her co-star, Heath Ledger. 10 Things I Hate About You is a teen romance movie that focuses on Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Cameron James getting Heath Ledger's Patrick Verona to persuade the "scary" Kat Stratford (Stiles) into dating him, so that James could finally get together with her sister, Larisa Oleynik's Bianca, due to an overcomplicated dating rule. What started as a cold arrangement turns into something more, as Patrick falls for Kat. 2 Moana (2026) Next up is Disney's live-action Moana. The film recently arrived on the streaming service on October 21, instantly becoming a major hit. Right now, 2026's Moana is the most popular movie on Disney+ in the US. As such, if you are one of those who did not watch the live-action Moana in theaters, now is the perfect time to do so with a bucket of popcorn and a sing-along session from the comfort of home. Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Maui after playing the character in the original animated Moana movie. The proximity between the live-action remake and the animated Moana 2, which arrived in theaters only two years prior, in 2024, led to many not making the trip to theaters for the 2026 release, which grossed $323.6 million against a hefty $250 million budget. Still, the live-action Moana has catchy songs, vibrant visuals, and some charismatic performances to make it a hit with the whole family on Disney+. 1 Companion (2025) Finally, the R-rated sci-fi thriller Companion recently became available through Hulu on Disney+ on October 18. The movie stars The Boys' Jack Quaid and Yellowjackets' Sophie Thatcher, following them as a couple, Josh and Iris, who seem to live a happy life before a weekend getaway with a friend group ends up taking a dark turn, revealing there is a companion robot amid them, raising morality debates and starting a fight for survival. Companion is produced by Resident Evil reboot director Zach Cregger, and directed by Drew Hancock. The sci-fi thriller is an action-packed ride filled with suspense, an electric performance from Thatcher, and a role that allows Quaid to show his range as an actor. At a near-perfect 93% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and an excellent 88% audience score, Companion is the perfect movie to end the weekend on Disney+. 10 Things I Hate About You 8/10 Release Date March 31, 1999 Runtime 97 minutes Set in a modern high school, 10 Things I Hate About You follows new student Cameron as he devises a plan to date Bianca Stratford. His attempt hinges on finding a suitor for Bianca's older sister, Kat, leading him to team up with a rebellious peer with a complex reputation. Cast Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Susan May Pratt, Gabrielle Union, Larry Miller, Daryl Mitchell, Allison Janney, David Leisure, Greg Jackson, Kyle Cease, Terence Heuston, Cameron Fraser, Eric Riedmann, Quinn Maixner, Demegio Kimbrough, Todd Butler, Dennis Mosley, Bianca Kajlich, Nick Vukelic, Ben Laurance, Aidan Kennedy Director Gil Junger Moana 6/10 Release Date July 10, 2026 Runtime 120 Minutes In Disney's live-action adaptation of "Moana," a young Polynesian girl embarks on a daring voyage to save her people, seeking the demigod Maui's help to restore the heart of Te Fiti.
