Since U.S. President Donald Trump was elected for his second stint in the Oval Office, Snopes has covered the increasingly tumultuous diplomatic relationship between the United States and its neighbor to the north, Canada. Before he was inaugurated, Trump falsely claimed the U.S. subsidized Canada with more than $100 million a year. Early into his second term, the U.S. president then levied major tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, sparking an escalating trade war and even inspiring one Canadian liquor store to remove American products from its shelves. With the friendship between the two countries — as well as Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney — under strain, we dug into our archives to put together a collection of claims we've investigated regarding U.S.-Canada relations, specifically since the 2024 presidential election.
