This bizarre silent comedy turned $150,000 and a lot of beavers into a cult hit Image: SRH Sign in to your Polygon.com account Dropout has become a go-to streaming service for fans of weird, inventive comedy, with everything from Game Changer to Make Some Noise giving comedians room to get increasingly ridiculous. Now, the service has added a movie that fits right in with that sensibility — and you can watch it for free with a Dropout subscription. Hundreds of Beavers, the gloriously strange 2024 silent comedy, is now streaming on Dropout. If you somehow missed the movie during its theatrical and VOD run, this is a pretty good excuse to finally see why it became one of the year's biggest cult comedy discoveries. Polygon called Hundreds of Beavers the funniest movie of 2024, describing it as a modern take on the silent comedies of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, filtered through the logic of a video game. What is Hundreds of Beavers about? Hundreds of Beavers follows Jean Kayak (Ryland Brickson Cole Tews), a trapper whose life is ruined when a bunch of beavers cause absolute chaos. Stranded in the snowy wilderness, Kayak sets out to survive, hunting animals and collecting beaver pelts in the hope of eventually earning enough money to marry a merchant's daughter. Image: SRH The movie is a black-and-white, dialogue-free slapstick comedy that plays like someone turned a classic silent movie into a video game. Kayak gradually upgrades his equipment, learns how different animals behave and racks up beaver pelts, complete with counters and game-like menus. And then there are the beavers. Most are played by people wearing enormous mascot costumes, including beaver construction workers, lawyers, judges and even a Sherlock-and-Watson-style detective duo. The movie was reportedly made for just $150,000, with its directors doing a lot with a little and earning a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. If you like your comedy strange, physical and relentlessly committed to the bit, Hundreds of Beavers is well worth adding to your Dropout watchlist.
