2 MBBS interns sexually harassed on medical college campus, students protest

Two MBBS interns at a Haryana government medical college in Sonipat district alleged a labourer harassed and assaulted them on campus. The accused has been arrested, while students staged a protest demanding stronger security arrangements on the campus.Police said the two incidents took place separately within minutes of each other on the night of August 15. The interns, who live in the hostels at Bhagat Phool Singh Government Medical College for Women in Gohana, were allegedly targeted while walking alone on the campus.An official of the Women Police Station at Khanpur Kalan said, "On August 15, one female doctor was headed towards the library on the campus at around 10:30 pm. Another one was proceeding for her duty. The accused labourer inappropriately touched them. He targeted both the female intern doctors when they were walking separately at different time intervals with a gap of a few minutes between the two incidents."The official said a case was registered on the complaint of the interns and the labourer, who worked at an under-construction site on the campus, was arrested on August 16. According to the police, the case has been registered under BNS Sections 74, dealing with assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, and 78, dealing with stalking.Following the incident, several MBBS students staged a dharna outside the institute director's office on Tuesday, demanding adequate security and more guards on the campus. A protesting student told reporters, "We went to authorities and put issues related to security concerns before them. We had a long meeting with college authorities. They gave assurance also, but just a day after the incident, we found there was no security guard deployed or no light installed at the spot where the incident took place."She added, "In such an insecure environment, we cannot work like this," and said security was important not only for MBBS students but also for healthcare workers, doctors, patients and others.The students said the campus was large but did not have enough guards, and demanded immediate steps to improve safety after the alleged assault of the two interns.- EndsPublished By: India Today Web Desk Published On: Aug 19, 2026 07:55 IST
