The proliferation of AI-generated content has increased the amount of uplifting — but completely false — stories about the generosity of stars. Published Sept. 4, 2026 In the wake of the passing of Dolly Parton in August 2026, a story we previously debunked in December 2025 about Parton opening an animal sanctuary resurfaced. Parton's real acts of charity were well documented throughout her career, yet this false story still made the rounds. This was a type of claim we refer to "glurge," a term originating in the 1990s that we've defined as "a sentimental or heart-rending story that undermines its own inspirational message by distorting — or ignoring — the facts." Tales like the one about Parton's supposed animal shelter would indeed be inspiring ... if they were true.
