Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Rogue One - Chirrut & Baze #110 years after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm and Marvel have been releasing all-new prequel stories to celebrate the major anniversary of one of the best Star Wars films in the current Disney era. This includes the latest one-shot starring none other than Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus, one of the galaxy's greatest duos of all time. As seen in the new Star Wars: Rogue One – Chirrut & Baze #1 written by Stephanie Phillips with art by Sean Chen and Kieran Mckeown, the former Guardians of the Whills are shown on the holy moon of Jedha, seeking to delay the efforts of the Empire any way they can. Overall, this newly released one-shot is a perfect prequel story allowing readers to appreciate Îmwe and Malbus even more ahead of the events of Rogue One. Here's why. Star Wars Releases A New Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus Story In Chirrut & Baze #1, the new Star Wars comic opens on the two future heroes of the Rebellion on Jedha, where the Empire's occupation has already begun as they seek to strip-mine the entire moon of its vast stores of kyber crystals. In response, Chirrut comes up with a plan to sabotage a kyber mine with explosives after all the hired miners are gone for the day, hoping to delay the Empire's efforts long enough until Chirrut and Baze devise a plan to rid Jedha of the Imperials for good. However, their mission becomes far less straightforward after it's revealed that not all of the miners left for the day. What follows is an incredible story that perfectly highlights the contrasting personalities of Chirrut with his unwavering faith in the Force and Baze's blunt cynicism in the face of the Empire's oppression. And yet, Baze and Chirrut are still an incredibly heroic duo, with this new story setting up their role in Rogue One quite well with their ultimate willingness to sacrifice everything for a purpose and a cause much bigger than either of them. As a result, this new and canonical prequel is certainly a worthwhile must-read for all Star Wars fans, especially those who love Rogue One and its impressive ensemble cast, highlighting Chirrut and Baze's efforts to resist the Empire well before they ever met Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso at the beginning of the 2016 Star Wars movie. Rogue One's 10th Anniversary Comics Have Been Crushing It Having been released throughout 2026, Marvel's new Chirrut & Baze #1 is part of a whole series of 10th-anniversary Rogue One one-shots, each one starring a different character. Before this latest issue, Marvel had published one-shots starring Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso, and Saw Gerrera respectively. The fifth and final one-shot is set to release at the end of this month starring Darth Vader (though director Orson Krennic is also confirmed to be featured in the new story). Across the board, these new issues have been doing a great job expanding these characters and what they were doing just before the events of Rogue One, thereby making the 2016 movie even better 10 years later. Just looking at Chirrut & Baze alone proves that these characters introduced in Rogue One are well worth revisiting and still have all kinds of potential, despite the vast majority meeting their ends by the end of Rogue One itself. Release Date December 16, 2016 Runtime 133 Minutes Director Gareth Edwards Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a standalone film set in the Star Wars universe, where a group of resistance fighters, led by Jyn Erso, embarks on a mission to steal the Death Star plans.
