The Marvel Universe is home to many complex antiheroes, but few are as unhinged as Frank Castle, the Punisher. Rather than being driven by justice or redemption, he is fueled by an unspeakable, endless rage born from the tragic loss of his family. Unlike Captain America and Spider-Man, Castle uses lethal tactics to wage war on crime with no mercy. Castle’s relentless crusade has pushed him to horrifying extremes that often match the brutality of the criminals he hunts. Castle has repeatedly shown he won’t cross many ethical boundaries to eliminate his targets. Whether he is feeding mobsters to wild animals or engaging in brutal torture, his methods are always a jaw-dropping spectacle. This article highlights 10 of the most twisted things the Punisher has done in Marvel comics, bringing to light the absolute rock-bottom moments of his vigilante career. These aren’t simple military tactics; they are cold, calculated, and often deeply unsettling acts that demonstrate how far removed Castle is from traditional heroism. 10 Killing A Man With Another Man’s Head -The Punisher MAX #5 Frank Castle is a master marksman well known for pumping criminals full of lead. But that doesn’t mean the Punisher isn’t skillful and creative with his hands. Sometimes it’s better to be gunned down than to have the Punisher put hands on you. This is exemplified in The Punisher MAX #5, where Frank cuts loose on two crooks. When the Punisher finds himself surrounded by crooks, he gets to work dismantling the crowd systematically, one by one. He grabs one crook, flips him parallel to the ground, and uses him as a human battering ram to bash the skull of another man, killing the two simultaneously. How he kills makes for a twisted display of skill and power. 9 The Punisher Tortured Human Traffickers in a Story That Tested His Own Brand of Justice Punisher MAX: The Slavers In The Slavers, the Punisher sets out to take down a sex-slave operation. He rescues a young girl from human traffickers, and after hearing how the traffickers abused, humiliated, and enslaved her, he is filled with uncontrollable rage. He decides to hunt down everyone involved in the sex-slave ring and rescue the remaining victims. A different side of the Punisher emerges as he hunts down the slavers while treating the women he tries to save with a sensitivity he rarely shows. Frank methodically dissects the human trafficker, Cristu Bulat, and gives him one of the most gruesome deaths yet. Then targets Vera Konstantin, the one running the operation. When Castle confronts Vera Konstantin, he slams her against a shatterproof high-rise window again and again until the frame gives way, and she plunges to her death. The Slavers stands apart from other Punisher tales by pausing for rare introspection about his vigilante creed. He knows another trafficking ring will replace this one, yet he keeps fighting. 8 Frank Castle Fed Ma Gnucci to Polar Bears in One of His Most Twisted Revenge Plots — Punisher (2000) #11–12 During a showdown between The Punisher and the Mob, he lures Ma Gnucci into a trap in the heart of the Central Park Zoo. There he systematically dispatches her henchmen using the Zoo exhibits. He feeds several of Gnucci’s men to piranhas and drops one into a snake pit. Consequently, when he finds himself in a polar bear enclosure, he saves the most gruesome fate for Ma Gnucci and the remnants of her men. He delivers a massive right hook to one polar bear’s jaw, enraging it before it crawls out of the pit and throws Ma Gnucci and her guards in. The polar bears sliced off the gangsters’ heads, but they did not kill Ma Gnucci; the police luckily saved her, but not before losing her scalp and all her limbs in the attack. This story shows that surviving an encounter with Frank Castle is potentially a fate worse than death. Either die or end up a vegetable. 7 Frank Castle Killed Almost Every Superhero in the Marvel Universe — Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe In the 1995 miniseries Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe, the Punisher embarks on a brutal killing spree that no other Marvel antihero can match. After learning that his family died in Central Park, caught in the crossfire between superheroes and alien invaders, he quickly retaliates by killing Cyclops, Hawkeye, and Jubilee. Frank is arrested and imprisoned, but it doesn’t last long, as a man named Kesselring rescues him. Frank vows to kill all superhumans and quickly gets to work, murdering everyone with superpowers, including the Human Torch, Spider-Man, Venom, Kingpin, Captain America, and Doctor Doom. He also murders Bruce Banner in his sleep, showcasing his efficient brutality. 6 The Punisher Executed Barracuda After a Brutal, Personal War - Punisher MAX: Long Cold Dark In Garth Ennis’s acclaimed MAX run, the rivalry between Frank Castle and the sociopathic mercenary Barracuda becomes one of Marvel’s most painfully intimate and barbaric conflicts. When Barracuda crosses the line by kidnapping The Punisher’s infant child, Frank launches a confrontation that quickly turns into a desperate, feral brawl, with horrific moments of self-mutilation and savagery. After blinding Barracuda and cutting off his hand, Frank bites into his cheek, tearing off his flesh and pumping his body full of ammunition, before curb-stomping him to the ground. He then tortures Barracuda with a high-voltage car battery and eventually puts him out of his misery by amputating his arms and taking his head off with a pickaxe. 5 The Punisher Shot Two Criminals Who Tried to Join Captain America’s Resistance - Civil War #5 The desperate struggle in the Civil War, sparked by ideological differences, quickly became a global battle between superhumans, with each side taking its stand. The conflict pushed Iron Man and Captain America to their limits, leaving both desperate and willing to welcome villains into their ranks. Supervillains Plunderer and Goldbug enter the resistance’s base, hoping to join Captain America in his fight against Iron Man’s forces, but before they can say a word, the Punisher shoots them both down. This enrages Captain America, who attacks Frank, frustrated by his lack of restraint, but it also shows that Frank Castle isn’t much of a team player. 4 The Punisher Massacred New York’s Criminal Underworld After His Family’s Graves Were Desecrated - Punisher MAX: Up Is Down, Black Is White The Punisher is ruthless towards criminals, and his code means that no criminal or gangster is safe from his wrath. Still, some gangsters have crossed the line and earned a spot at the top of Frank’s to-do list. Mobster Nicky Cavella falls into this category after desecrating Frank’s family’s graves and inciting his wrath. In Garth Ennis’s Up Is Down, Black Is White, Nicky digs up the bodies of Frank’s dead family and records himself defiling their bodies. He sends the videos to news outlets, and the videos are published for the world to see. The Punisher does not let this disrespect go unanswered. The Punisher dismantles Cavella’s entire criminal organization by murdering every single member. He ultimately corners Cavella in the woods of New Jersey, shooting him in the gut and explaining the gruesome way that Cavella will die of blood poisoning. This sends a message to the entire criminal world that Frank’s Family is off-limits. 3 Frank Castle Became a Weapon for Hydra During Secret Empire - Secret Empire While Frank Castle has a deep respect for Captain America, that didn’t make his actions in Secret Empire any less shocking to readers. After Captain America recruits him to work for Hydra, he carries out kill missions. He willingly joins the evil organization, even altering the skull emblem on his costume to Hydra’s symbol. Furthermore, Frank weirdly never questioned any orders given to him by Steve Rogers. It was no surprise when it was later revealed that Hydra had manipulated Frank, using his admiration for Steve as the catalyst. Nonetheless, at his core, Frank is a deeply troubled man whose brutal code leads him to commit atrocities along the same vein regardless of manipulation. 2 Punisher Nukes The X-Men and The Brotherhood on the Moon - Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe. The Punisher’s plan to take down the mutants is one of his most depraved acts. Set in an alternate story where Frank’s family is accidentally killed by superhero cabals, his approach to dealing with the mutants is equal parts creative and psychotic. He lures both the X-Men and the Brotherhood to the Moon, launching one of Doctor Doom’s Nuclear missiles. He succeeds in killing them all at once, except Wolverine, whose healing factor saves him from immediate death. Frank gets creative when killing Wolverine. He weaponizes Wolverine’s own claws against him, drives them through his chest, and throws him into a generator. The excess electricity neutralized Wolverine’s healing factor. The killing of the superhumans was brutal, but the killing of the mutants is a product of a truly twisted mind. 1 Mutilating Wolverine‐ Punisher #17 The Punisher is no stranger to fighting Marvel’s greatest superheroes, first appearing in Amazing Spider-Man #129 and famously coming to blows with Spider-Man after mistaking him for a criminal. While these confrontations usually end anticlimactically, his fight with Wolverine stands out as one of his most brutal displays. In 2002’s Punisher #17, the fight kicks off with the Punisher shooting Wolverine’s face clean off with a shotgun. He then fires a shot at Wolverine’s groin and ends the fight by running him over with a steamroller. Regardless of Wolverine’s healing factor, no one should go through this ordeal.
